1. The Jimi Hendrix Experience (1967) "The Wind Cries Mary" by Jimi Hendrix
[YouTube]
Will the wind ever remember
The names it has blown in the past?
And with this crutch
Its old age and its wisdom
It whispers, "No, this will be the last"
And the wind cries "Mary"
2. Crosby Stills and Nash (1969) "Wooden Ships" by Kantor / Crosby / Stills
[YouTube]
And it's a fair wind
Blowin' warm out of the south over my shoulder
Guess I'll set a course and go
3. King Crimson (1969) "I Talk To The Wind" by McDonald and Sinfield
[YouTube]
I talk to the wind
My words are all carried away
I talk to the wind
The wind does not hear
The wind cannot hear
4. Van Morrison (1970) "Into the Mystic" by Van Morrison
[YouTube]
We were born before the wind
Also, younger than the sun
'Ere the bonnie boat was won
As we sailed into the mystic
5. Badger (1973) "Wind of Change" by Badger
[YouTube]
Flying over mountains on a wind of change
Sifting over valleys of a timeless dawn
The flyer is a free man, although he ain't no he-man
You'll find he don't need your strength at all
6. Lynyrd Skynyrd (1973) "Tuesday's Gone" by Van Zant / Collins
[YouTube]
Train roll on, on down the line
Won't you please take me far, far away
Now I feel the wind blow, outside my door
I'm leavin' my woman at home, oh yeah
Tuesday's gone with the wind
Oh my baby's gone, gone with the wind
7. Traffic (1974) "Walkin in the Wind" by Steve Winwood
[YouTube]
I'm walking in the wind, looking at the sky
Hanging on a breeze. and wondering why, why
8. Queen (1975) "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Freddie Mercury
[YouTube]
I'm just a poor boy, I need no sympathy
Because I'm easy come, easy go
Little high, little low
Any way the wind blows, doesn't really matter to me, to me
9. Anthony Phillips (1977) "Which Way the Wind Blows" by Anthony Phillips
[YouTube]
I sit in the sunset
Watching God's evening,
Receding so gently now
Into the Westlands.
I think I'm at peace now
But of nothing am I certain
Only which way will the wind blow next time?
10. Christopher Cross (1979) "Ride Like the Wind" by Christopher Cross
[YouTube]
Accused and tried and told to hang
I was nowhere in sight when the church bells rang
Never was the kind to do as I was told
Gonna ride like the wind before I get old
11. Rush (1984) "Distant Early Warning" by Lee / Lifeson / Peart
[YouTube]
An ill wind comes arising
Across the cities of the plain
There's no swimming in the heavy water
No singing in the acid rain
Red alert, red alert
12. Willie Nelson (1987) "Cold November Wind" by Phyllis Horne
[YouTube]
And after all the warmth
Of a love that had it all
A cold November wind
Is the hardest way to fall
13. Bruce Cockburn (1991) "Child Of The Wind" by Bruce Cockburn
[YouTube]
Hear the wind moan
In the bright diamond sky
These mountains are waiting
Brown-green and dry
I'm too old for the term
But I'll use it anyway
I'll be a child of the wind
Till the end of my days
As with prior lists, the references are mostly older, primarily because my musical outlook changed
and the blues and progressive genres aren't as "windy" in reference. And, yes, there are many others
with 'wind' prominent in the lyrics and/or the title, including excellent and popular songs, most of
which simply didn't resonate with my inner cool. These include songs like Bob Seger's Against
the Wind or even artists and songs that I love but that just didn't fit, such as Pink Floyd's A
Pillow of Winds, Yusef Islam (Cat Stevens) The Wind, or Santana's absolutely wonderful
Song of the Wind (but only because it's an instrumental).
